Northern lights season 2026-27 is starting now. The practical season runs from September through early April, and the weeks around the September equinox are, statistically, some of the most geomagnetically active of the entire year. The Sun passed the peak of Solar Cycle 25 around late 2024, but that is not bad news for aurora watchers: the declining phase of a solar cycle has historically produced some of the strongest geomagnetic storms, driven by coronal holes and fast solar wind streams that return every 27 days like clockwork.

When Does Northern Lights Season Actually Start?

Here is the part that surprises people: the aurora itself has no season. The auroral oval, a ring of light around each magnetic pole, is active essentially every night of the year. What changes is whether you can see it.

At aurora latitudes, summer skies simply never get dark enough. In Fairbanks, Tromsø, or northern Canada, twilight lingers through the night from May to early August, and the aurora is washed out behind it. The "season" is really a darkness season:

  • Late August to early September: skies at high latitudes finally get dark enough after midnight. The season opens.
  • September to March: the core season. Long nights, and two statistical activity peaks around the equinoxes.
  • April: the season winds down as nights shorten again.

For the northern-tier US states, darkness is less of a constraint, so the limiting factor is geomagnetic activity itself: you need a strong enough storm to push the oval south to your latitude. That is where the equinox effect comes in.

Why the Equinox Weeks Are the Sweet Spot

Decades of geomagnetic records show a clear pattern: activity peaks around the equinoxes, late September and late March, and dips around the solstices. The main explanation is the Russell-McPherron effect. Around the equinoxes, the geometry between Earth's magnetic field and the interplanetary magnetic field carried by the solar wind favors the southward alignment that lets solar wind energy couple into Earth's magnetosphere.

You do not need the physics to use the pattern. The takeaway is simple: the next six weeks or so, and again in March, are the best base-rate windows of the season. A storm can happen any month, but if you can only stay up late and drive to a dark sky a handful of nights this season, spend those nights near the equinoxes.

What Solar Cycle 25's Declining Phase Means for 2026-27

Solar Cycle 25 reached its maximum period around late 2024, which produced the storm most people remember: the May 2024 G5 event that pushed aurora as far south as Florida. Since then the sunspot count has been easing off, and it is fair to ask whether the show is over.

History says no, and the reason is worth understanding:

  • Solar maximum produces storms mainly through coronal mass ejections, big eruptive events that are dramatic but irregular.
  • The declining phase produces storms through coronal holes: regions of open magnetic field that stream fast solar wind toward Earth. Coronal holes can persist for months and rotate back toward Earth roughly every 27 days, which makes declining-phase storms weaker on average but far more recurrent and predictable.

Several of the strongest storms of past cycles arrived one to three years after maximum. For the 2026-27 season, the practical expectation is fewer Florida-grade surprises, but a steady supply of Kp 5 to 7 nights, exactly the range that lights up the northern-tier states again and again. How to Turn a Storm Into a Sighting

The mechanics have not changed, and they take thirty seconds:

  1. Check the Kp index. The live Kp index updates from NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center every 3 hours. Kp is a 0 to 9 scale of global geomagnetic disturbance.

  3. If it matches, go. Dark northern horizon, away from city lights, between roughly 10 PM and 2 AM local time.

The Season Checklist

  • Darkness: no aurora fights a full moon well. Check the moon phase before a long drive; the nights around a new moon are worth twice the effort.
  • Clouds: geomagnetic forecasts and weather forecasts are separate problems. A G3 storm behind an overcast sky is a podcast, not a light show.
  • North view: from the contiguous US, aurora usually appears low on the northern horizon first. Hills, trees, and city glow to your north cost you more than they seem to.
  • Patience: displays come in substorms, surges of activity that build and fade over tens of minutes. Fifteen minutes of quiet sky does not mean the night is over.
